How to Get Rid of Beard Dandruff

You’re proud of that gorgeous face mane, as you should be. It took a lot of grooming, trimming and styling to make it look and feel so incredible. But if you’re like a lot of dudes, you may have the occasional flake of dandruff raining on your beautiful beard parade. It’s a real bummer, but it’s not a beard-breaker. We’re here to tell you that if you struggle with the ’druff, you don’t have to shave your beard. You just need to follow these tips and invest in a few amazing beard care products to stop the snowstorm on your face.

What Causes Beard Dandruff?

We all know the skinny on scalp dandruff—it’s the scaly white/yellowish stuff that snows from your head as a result of irritated, oily or dry skin—and beardruff is really no different. In fact, all kinds of dandruff, whether it shows up on the scalp, your beard or your eyebrows, can be triggered by the same set of skin concerns. In this case, beard care is really just skin care, but don’t let that scare you because it’s easier than you might think to master.

Dry skin isn’t the only culprit. Your ’druff may be occurring due to fungus on the skin, contact dermatitis (when your grooming products trigger irritation), not shampooing enough or even because your skin is oily. Yes, we’re telling you that beard dandruff can happen when your skin is too dry and too oily. It feels like you can’t win, but don’t worry,  we know how to balance it out.

How Do You Get Rid of It for Good?

Banishing the beard dandruff comes down to getting your skin to a happy, balanced state. Not too dry, not too oily. To do that, you’ve got to follow this simple routine a few times a week.

dandruff shampoo
  • Shampoo --- We know it seems weird. But trust us. Using our super-hydrating argan oil shampoo will clean your strands without overdrying them, leaving you with a clean (and amazing-smelling) slate to start step two of your new dandruff-eliminating routine.
  • Condition --- Yep, just like the hair on your head. This is another easy step to throw in your shower routine and can make all the difference in the look and feel of your facial hair. Our peppermint-scented anti-dandruff conditioner contains both a protein and a humectant that strengthen hair and balance out moisture in the hair and skin. Let it soak in for a minute or two in the shower and you’ll have soft, velvety facial hair in no time.
  • Exfoliate (Sometimes) —The word exfoliation (or scrub) can seem really scary if you’re new to skincare, but seriously, don’t fret. Exfoliation is just the process of removing the top layer of dead skin cells from the surface of your skin (that’s normal guys!), using either a chemical exfoliator like salicylic acid and alpha-hydroxy acid or a manual exfoliator like a loofah, oats, sea salt or ground-up walnuts found in your face wash. Once or twice a week after you wash, gently exfoliate the beard region using a soft facial cloth.
  • beard oil
  • Beard Oil—After a good exfoliation sesh, it’s important to follow up with some deep moisture. Enter beard dandruff oil. This is the ticket to a silky-soft beard and soft, itch-free skin beneath it. Containing soothing moisturizers like safflower oil, grapeseed oil and vitamin E, this beard oil softens the coarse strands of beard hair and then seeps below the surface to saturate the skin with a hint of hydration. You can dab a few drops into the beard to banish the beardruff every day, but use a couple extra on the days you exfoliate. (Pro tip: you can swap this out for TREAT argan hair oil if you are in a pinch.)
  • Beard Balm --- We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the benefits of a beard balm for dandruff. How exactly does this beard-care product help? Well, this powerhouse formula is packed with moisturizing ingredients that work for hair and skin. So in addition to taming frizz, this all-natural beard balm helps to soften skin and keep flakes at bay.
  • Bonus --- If you are really itching to get rid of flakes, try a more potent anti-dandruff shampoo. This stuff is equipped with two of the most common and powerful dandruff-killers out there: 1.8 percent coal tar and 1.5 percent menthol (tea tree oil), providing soothing relief to stop itching and to moisturize and balance skin. The key is to not overdo it—wash your beard with dandruff shampoo two or three times a week to soothe the skin without irritation.
  • Adios, Beardruff

So there you have it, guys. The beardruff-busting regimen you need to stop the snowstorm for good. And though it might add a few extra minutes to your grooming routine, it’s a small price to pay for those show-stopping facial locks that make you the man you are.
